small donkey Inaccurate, Unresearched and Insensitive Award

. . . for bad news that is just what the name of the award is about,
alterNative Voices bestows the "Bad News Award".

Here listed are our honorees and their Bad News:

BAD NEWS

'Bad News' I would like to nominate Dr. Dave Eicher for the Inaccurate, Unresearched and Insensitive Award. As reported by Anchorage Daily News 4/14/06.

This letter is in response to Dr. Eichlers' comments that clearly describe his perception of Americas' Indigenous peoples. His crass comments provided a harrowing view of the dark, empty twin spaces where his heart and brain should be.

Dr. Eichler is President of the Alaska Dental Society. The position of "President" in most organizations is one of respect. One could presume that a person in this position would be an advocate for promoting proactive views that exude both intelligence and knowledge.

He suggests that Natives are 'undignified' and 'dependant' on funded health care and eliminating the funding would further our assimilation and bestow us with dignity. Dr. Eichler, health care was paid for by my ancestor's lives and blood - it is a contract not welfare!

He further implies that if we 'disappear' it would be 'rightfully so'! Dr. Eichler, how can you ignorantly imply that an entire race of peoples deserves to disappear? Would you be more comfortable if we disappeared?!

So, Dr. Dave Eichler you have earned the award for inaccurate, unresearched, and insensitive comments about Native people.

BAD NEWS

'Bad News' award to Limbaugh calls Native Americans "injuns" - again.

On the August 17 broadcast of his nationally syndicated radio talk show, Rush Limbaugh referred to Native Americans as "injuns." After a caller suggested that legislation introduced by Sen. Daniel Akaka (D-HI), which would grant limited rights of self-government to Native Hawaiians, was a first step toward establishing Native Hawaiian-owned casinos, Limbaugh responded, "So in your mind they're simply trying to duplicate the actions taken by the American injuns, and get themselves set up so they have casinos over there?"

Media Matters has documented at least four separate instances of Limbaugh using this slur on his program during the past year. In addition to his use of the term on August 17, Limbaugh used the term on the January 26, 2005, September 22, 2004, and November 24, 2004, editions of his program. . . . and so on . . .

BAD NEWS

alterNative Voices is awarding our "Bad News award" to North American Indian Ministries based in Delta British Columbia Canada. Our volunteer producer is so naive. She trusts most people and expects to be treated with the same respect she offers others. Boy is she naive!

This is a first person editorial by that producer. It gets the badest of "bad news awards" for 'christian' culture crushers, closed minds, closed doors and closed hearts.

Last week-end alterNative Voices was thrown out of a Christian Youth conference in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Also thrown out was our sponsoring agency, good people of the United Methodist Church. We were in a public building on the campus of Colorado College in Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA. We were first accused of playing "peyote" music and were told to stop as people were offended. We informed the lady that we were not playing "peyote" music. The artists we were playing were, Bill Miller, Calvin Standing Bear, Andrew Vasquez, all stage entertainers, none singing "peyote" songs. The offended persons should know more about the music of Native performers before being 'offended' and telling us to stop.

The next morning the producer was confronted by an anglo man, Mr. Chuck Harper, who said we would have to pack up and get out. We were judged pagan and false prophets because we had on our table Canyon Records Vintage collections and one of them is "Peyote Ceremony". (note: these were for sale and sealed) As well one CD was titled "Sundance". These were the offending items.

The producer invoked first amendment rights in this country and self-appointed music police can not abridge our free speech rights. Mr. Harper said this is not a free speech question it is of a higher authority and he was speaking directly - so it seemed - for Jesus himself. This was about having pagan and false prophet music on our table. Seems that overnight the organizers went through our inventory to find the offending CDs. They judged that Jesus would not approve.

Our staff wonders still when did Jesus give these arrogant 'holier than thou' people the total authority to censor and sit in judgement of traditional recordings. Mr. Harper kept asking if we know what they do in those ceremonies? This producer honestly said she does not know personally because these are not her tribal traditions and will not stand in judgement of other traditions. Jesus did not give us that authority! And we think He actually said something about anyone judging others!

We tell you this story to encourage you to beware - beware for yourself and your children. When someone tells you your traditions, your culture, your ancestors, your history is wrong, pagan, false - no matter who you are - BEWARE. You do not have to try to turn white to have an spiritual afterlife - or whatever your belief is. And we do not believe Jesus would approve of this either. He was a tribal man himself you know.

Knowing this organization has insulted alterNative Voices and the United Methodist's and denied us our constitutional rights ---- what have they done to our elders and traditional people in front of our children and what will they do???

alterNative Voices was there to sell books and music that supports Native radio production and give out scholarship information. We are here to let the people know and tell the truth as we experience it.
