Scholarship Announcement

The Minority Corporate Counsel Association (MCCA) is pleased to announce that it has created the Lloyd M. Johnson, Jr. (“LMJ”) Scholarship Program, which is open to college seniors who have been accepted into law school for the fall of 2005 and will be J.D. candidates in 2008. MCCA appreciates your commitment to help us with our outreach efforts. Please disseminate this information to all of the students/schools on your list server. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

Named after the founder of MCCA, the LMJ Scholarship Program will award ten newly accepted law students from disadvantaged backgrounds with scholarships to help defray their education expenses. The ten selected students will each receive $10,000 a year for three years. Other exciting components of the LMJ Scholarship Program include providing prominent members of the legal community as mentors, and MCCA’s support in locating summer legal employment at a leading corporate law department after the first-year. In addition to the ten selected scholars, three runners-up will also receive a one-time award of $10,000 to assist with their first-year expenses.

Scholarship applications and additional information are available at www.mcca.com. The deadline for applications is June 1, 2005. MCCA has retained the services of the United Negro College Fund (“UNCF”) to assist with the promotion and administration of the program. UNCF will score the completed applications, and provide a list of the top candidates to MCCA for final review with the LMJ Scholarship Selection Committee to select the winners. Once the scholarships are awarded, the program requires each recipient to maintain a G.P.A. of 3.0 or its equivalent each year. UNCF will ensure that the LMJ Scholars remain eligible for the program by confirming that they meet yearly requirements of the scholarships to receive the next year’s award.

The Discover Card Tribute Award Scholarship Program is the largest corporate scholarship program in the nation, making available about 450 scholarships valued at over $1 million dollars annually. We are very interested to see that our applicants reflect the great diversity of the country and have equal access to this program. The scholarship program has two levels: a state and a national competition and awards are given out at both levels. The program is only open to high school juniors. Up to nine awards of $2,500 are given at the state level. The top 3 state awardees then compete for the national awards. Up to nine awards of $25,000 are given at the national level (this is in addition to the $2,500 the awardee received for his/her state level award). Winning applicants will be notified in May of their junior year that they have won money for post secondary education. Applicants must have at least a 2.75 grade point average. The scholarships are not based on grades (other than the 2.75 minimum GPA) or family income as many programs are. Judging criteria are Special Skills or Talents, Leadership, Community Service and Obstacles or Disadvantages the student has encountered or overcome. Winning applicants may use their awards not only for 2 or 4 year college, but also for any accredited trade/technical/training program. Full information regarding the program (including the application which may be downloaded) can be found at http://www.aasa.org/.

If you have any questions, please feel free to direct them to me at the contact points listed below.
I truly appreciate your sharing the Discover Card Tribute Award Scholarship Program information with the individuals you serve.

WRITING FELLOWSHIPS AT WRITERS COLONY AT DAIRY HOLLOW
479-253-7444
E-Mail
director@writerscolony.org
www.writerscolony.org for applications

Ever think you could write that novel, short story or cookbook if only you had enough uninterrupted time?

Now's your chance! The Writers Colony at Dairy Hollow in Eureka Springs,
Arkansas, is now taking applications for eight dedicated fellowships. Each fellowship includes a one-month stay at the Colony, with all expenses paid; the writer only pays for his or her transportation to and from the Colony. No worries. No interruptions. Just you and your words, alone at last. The following fellowships are available:

THE AMERICAN EGG BOARD FELLOWSHIP This fellowship is awarded annually to a culinary writer of demonstrated ability whose work involves the creative use of eggs in cooking and/or baking.

THE EUREKA! FELLOWSHIP FOR SHORT STORY WRITING A one-month, all-expense paid fellowship offers recognition to a gifted writer to focus fully on their work. It is awarded annually to a writer of short fiction (short stories) whose work demonstrates ability.

THE BRIDGE FUND FELLOWSHIP FOR THE CREATION OF ORIGINAL MATERIALS FOR TEACHING ARKANSAS HISTORY A one-month, all-expense paid fellowship plus a $1500 stipend is awarded annually to a writer, librarian, teacher, or dramatist to create well-conceived, original, innovative material which brings the teaching of Arkansas history alive.

THE FRED STARR FELLOWSHIP FOR HISTORICALLY BASED WRITING ON THE FOLKLORE AND CUSTOMS OF THE SOUTHERN HIGHLANDS This fellowship is awarded annually to a writer of gift whose work is set in or otherwise pertains to the folklore, customs, and history of America's Southern Highlands (the Appalachians, Ozarks, Ouachitas, or Great Smokey Mountains).

THE MOONDANCER FELLOWSHIP FOR NATURE AND OUTDOOR WRITING The Moondancer fellowship is awarded annually to a nature and/or outdoor writer of demonstrated ability. Acceptable projects include books and magazine articles.

THE NOTORIOUS FELLOWSHIP FOR LITERARY FICTION The Notorious prize offers recognition to an overlooked but gifted writer. It is awarded annually to a writer of fiction (novels, short stories, poetry, or plays) whose work shows demonstrated ability and gift, but has never achieved the success it deserves, either because the writer is early in his or her career and still unpublished, or because the work is more "literary" than commercial.

THE TYSON FELLOWSHIP FOR CULINARY WRITING (American Home Cooking or American Regional Cooking) A one-month, all-expense paid fellowship at the Writers' Colony at Dairy Hollow, Eureka Springs, Arkansas, is awarded annually to a culinary writer of demonstrated ability whose work pertains to traditional American home or regional cooking, and embodies the Tyson mandate of "feeding the world like family."

THE VIELUXE OUTDOOR COOKING FELLOWSHIP A one-month, all-expense paid fellowship at the Writers' Colony at Dairy Hollow is awarded annually to a culinary writer of demonstrated ability whose work pertains to the history and practice of outdoor cooking, including grilling and barbecue. Cookbooks, scholarly or historical works, and culinary memoir are all eligible. The outdoor cooking investigated may be of any nationality, any course or courses in the meal, any method, and may date from any period in history. Writing which explores marinades, sauces, rubs, brines, and other pre- or post-outdoor grilling enhancements is also eligible.

Deadline for all applications is Oct. 15. Applicants will be notified of their status no later than Dec. 15. Each fellowship application will be judged by a panel of literary professionals. WCDH provides two-week to three-month residencies for emerging and experienced writers and songwriters to work on specific projects. Each writer is also required to perform a minimum of one day of community service for every month they stay at the colony.

The Scholarship Surfer - Internet Search Databases
One of the the best ways to begin your scholarship search is by using the many free scholarship search databases found on the Internet.  These online services ask for personal information such as age, gender, ethnicity, grade-point average, extracurricular activities, organizational affiliation, and career interests.  They then use this information to scan their databases and provide you with a list of scholarships that fit your profile.  And because the best databases are actually free-of-charge to students, it won't cost you a penny to conduct these searches.
